Diabetes Care
Type 1 Diabetes Education
Outpatient education for patients with Type 1 diabetes is geared to a range of self-management skill levels
Self-Management is the key to real control
- For newly-diagnosed children and adults, “survival skills” education is provided on how to give yourself insulin, home blood glucose monitoring, ketone testing, basic meal planning and how to manage high and low blood sugar.
- Daily management skills include carbohydrate counting, adjusting insulin, and managing exercise and sick days.
- Intensive management education teaches patients how to work with a multiple-daily-injection or insulin pump regimen.
- Insulin pump training provides hands-on experience with pump operation, and practical guidance with daily pump use.
About Our Classes
Our classes are small and provide valuable opportunities to get to know others who are managing diabetes. The classes are conducted by dietitians and nurse educators who are certified as diabetes educators and insulin pump trainers. The Helwig Health and Diabetes Center program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
